10 Tips for Staying Sane While Filling Out College Applications
- Keep a Calendar. Write down all your important dates on the same calendar.
- Organize! Make sure you have all your documents in one place. Keep things like report cards, transcripts and test scores all together – you’ll be referring to them often.
- Stay Ahead of the Game. Nothing causes stress more than a last-minute deadline. Ask early for letters of recommendation (a month ahead, if possible). Allow enough time for your essays to undergo several drafts.
- Use the Common Application. A school or university's Common Application form is usually available online. Over 300 schools offer online application though their Common Application. What a time saver!
- Proofread. Never count on spell-check alone! Before you submit, proofread your application carefully. Have a friend or parent look at it with fresh eyes as well.
- Make Copies. If you’re working on paper, it’s always a good idea to keep a clean copy of the blank form, just in case you make a mistake and need it again. And when you are done, be sure to keep a copy of the completed application for your files. If you’re working on-line, always keep a print-out of your final application.
- Attend Events. There are many workshops and other free events that can help you as you apply to college. Check out the ones listed on the back of this Gazette.
- Talk to People – especially people who have gone through the application process themselves. They can help you out with tips of their own.
- Relax! Don’t stress out. Remember to enjoy your Senior year!
