The Federal GEAR UP Program provides six- or seven-year matching grants to states and partnerships for services that improve access to and success in higher education at high-poverty middle and high schools statewide.
In 2011, the U.S. Department of Education awarded $177.4 million for 66 grants under the GEAR UP Program that will help over 275,000 at-risk students. $77.3 million was awarded for state grants to include: California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. In addition to the 66 new grants awarded in 2011, GEAR UP is funding 88 continuation projects begin in the last five years that are providing comprehensive services to approximately 305,000 middle and high school students.
