This

will help you work together to prepare for college. We hope these
resources along with support from College Coaches will help make
college a reality for our Scholars.
What is the GEAR UP College
Coach Program?
The goal of the College
Coach program is to provide GEAR UP Scholars with an additional
role model to encourage them along the path to college. GEAR UP
will provide Scholars and their College Coaches valuable tools and
resources to help build a mentoring relationship and ultimately
prepare for college.
What is a College Coach?
A "College Coach" is an
adult friend or relative of a GEAR UP Scholar who can help him/her
stay on the path to college. Along with the GEAR UP Scholar's parents,
the College Coach provides support, friendship, and a positive role
model. Although this is not a formal agreement, College Coaches
are expected to make a commitment to their respective Scholars,
investing a little bit of time each month to provide support and
give guidance. College Coaches are generally selected by their respective
Scholars because they already have an established relationship.
The Coach is someone that the Scholar respects and admires.
How to choose
a College Coach:
GEAR UP has recommended
that the Scholars select someone who...
- Is not their parent or guardian;
- Is someone they already have an established relationship
with;
- Has graduated from high school;
- Went to college OR is willing to learn together with
the Scholar about the steps it will take to get there;
- Is willing to support and assist the Scholar in attending
college prep events and doing college prep activities.

Here are some
suggested College Coaches:
- A Neighbor
- Uncle, aunty, or older cousin
- Older brother or sister
- Pastor or a fellow church member
- Community club leader
- Athletic coach or hula instructor
- A good family friend
- Any other significant adult in a GEAR UP Scholar's life
