Capacity Building for Educators

For the past six years, GEAR UP has supported the College and Career Readiness Indicators Report, which presents high school level information on how well graduates are prepared to meet the HIDOE’s Vision of a High School graduate, as well as on college enrollment and remediation. These reports were cited by Achieve as an emerging best practice in accountability in 2010.

GEAR UP also convenes the Hawai‘i College Access Network (HICAN). During this past Springʻs HICAN summit, P-12 and higher education administrators/faculty and community partners worked together to share best practices in community building and identify indicators for community readiness. The summit featured examples of community engagement with both the Hawaii State Department of Education, the University of Hawai‘i Systems, and their community partners followed by work group discussions on the topic of community readiness.

GEAR UP also partners with the Pacific Financial Aid Association, and the Hawai‘i Association for College Admission Counseling. GEAR UP provides professional development opportunities to the members of these organizations by sponsoring events that help support the college readiness capacity-building efforts.
