Running Start Program

Running Start is a statewide program that allows public high school students to attend college classes during the fall, spring, and summer sessions while earning both high school and college credits. Academically qualified juniors and seniors can enroll in college classes through the University of Hawai‘i (UH) system as part of their high school coursework.

In 2014-15, GEAR UP partnered with HIDOE and UH campuses to increase the availability and accessibility of High School Based Running Start courses. With GEAR UP support, 14 Running Start courses serving 257 students were implemented on campus at eight schools statewide. Subjects included: Psychology, Astronomy, Religion, Speech, Sociology, English, Biology and Information and Communication Science.
