Read
your Acceptance Packet Carefully!!
In
the Spring or Summer before your first Fall semester at college,
do the following:
Let
your School know you are enrolling
- Submit
a "letter of intent" (to enroll) and/or tuition
deposit
A
letter of intent notifies your school that you plan to attend
and reserves your space in the incoming class. A monetary
deposit may also be required to ensure your place.
Check
in with your school's Financial Aid Office
- Complete/submit
Financial Aid forms
Let
your school know whether you will be accepting loans, grants,
scholarships offered to you.
Talk
to an Academic Advisor to plan out your class schedule
- Schedule
an appointment with an advisor
Whether
you know your major or not, it is a good idea to see an academic
advisor to get to plan out a manageable and ideal courseload
for each year of college.
Consider
attending a New Student Orientation
At
student orientation events, colleges offer assistance with registration
and show you around campus. Fellow students also provide you with
information that the brochures don't tell you, such as the best
places to eat, good places to study, etc. You can also meet other
new students.
- If
you are not able to attend the New Student Orientation, make sure
you know your way around campus BEFORE the first day of class.
Pay
for tuition and fees
- Make
sure to pay tuition and fees before the deadline, otherwise your
school may un-enroll you from classes and you may have to pay
late fees.
Register
for classes
- Most
schools use an online website for registtration.
Find
out how to access the website and where to get your username
and password. Often this website also allows you to search
for classes to take, view your grades, manage your financial
aid and use email.
Apply
for Housing (If you do not plan to live at home)
- Submit
a housing application as soon as possible and before the deadline.
Some
schools will not provide housing for students who submit their
housing applications late. Late housing applicants usually
are left with fewer dorm options.
Complete/Submit
a Health Clearance form
- Many
schools require vaccinations before arriving on campus so make
sure that you make a doctor's appointment to have your doctor
fill out the form or obtain needed vaccinations.
Find
out if you need to take placement exams
- These
may include Math, English, or Foreign Language. Read your acceptance
packet carefully for this information, or contact the admissions
department to find out how to go about taking required exams.
Submit
a final transcript
- Some
schools require a final transcript from your high school to check
your final grades.
Research
your School
- Get
to know your school and the programs they offer so that your transition
to your new school is easier and you can make the most out of
college.
