GET FEDERAL STUDENT AID! GET FAFSA!

  • FAFSA? What is that?

The FREE Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) is the application used to apply for federal financial aid. You can fill it out for free on-line at: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

  • Who should complete the FAFSA?

EVERYONE who might even be thinking about college should complete it! Why? Because applying can help you get free money for college, and qualify you for additional aid, scholarships and work-study from your college and other sources.

  • Start exploring your financial aid options!

By using FAFSA4caster, you and your family will receive an early estimate of eligibility for federal student aid. This Web site provides you with an opportunity to increase your knowledge of the financial aid process; become familiar with the various types of federal student aid that are available; and investigate other sources of aid, such as grants and scholarships.

  • Government forms are always so complicated!

Can someone help my family fill them out?

Yes! Some free resources you can go to for help: your high school counselors; the financial aid office at the college you want to get into, or the U.S. Department of Education

(call 1-800-4-FED-AID or 1-800-433-3243). Also check out some Tips For Filing Out Your FAFSA by the Princeton Review.

  • What are the FAFSA Codes for Hawaii Campuses?

When you complete the FAFSA you must enter the code numbers of the colleges you are considering. Here are the codes for some of the colleges in Hawaii.

    Hawaii Community College
    005258
    Honolulu Community College
    001612

    Kauai Community College

    001611
    University of Hawaii at Manoa
    001610
    Windward Community College
    010390

  • When should I fill out the FAFSA? Is there a deadline?

You can apply anytime after January 1 each year. Apply as early as possible, so you can get more money from scholarships and financial aid offices (which can have deadlines as early as March). Get started today!

  • I'm not sure which school I will go to or what it will cost. My parents haven't finished their taxes yet. Should I wait to complete the FAFSA until I sort this stuff out?

There will be more money available, the earlier you apply for financial aid. If your tax forms aren't completed yet, it's okay to estimate income figures on the FAFSA. Just get it in early - it will be easy to make adjustments to the form later on if necessary.

GET SCHOLARSHIPS!

Scholarships are a great resource to pay for college because they do not need to be repaid. There are numerous scholarships available to students based on a variety of criteria including financial need, academic achievement, ethnicity, and much more.

Student Loans

Many students rely on students loans to cover the cost of college. Loans are NOT FREE money - they need to be repaid. They should be the last type of financial aid you seek. Student loans are usually more flexible about repayment plans (some don't require any payments until after graduation from college, so long as you are a full-time student) and often have a lower interest rate than other bank loans. Here are some websites that offer information about various types of student loans:

Be a Copycat

It is extremely important to make or print copies of EVERYTHING before you send it! Keep a folder of all your financial aid information including forms tax returns, W-2's, etc. Having a folder will also make the verification process more efficient since all the necessary information is in one place!
